Question: I’ve heard about people making money buying and selling domain names. I know this market was hot during the dot com boom. But does it still present a viable “side income” opportunity today?

 Answer Marc Charles:

Yes. Buying and selling domain names can be a viable side business.

The domain market was extremely hot from 1999-2002, and my “domain portfolio” performed nicely during this period.

But the domain market is far from over.
Just to clarify…a domain name is the official name of a computer (host) which is connected to the Internet, like
Domain names are alphabetic Internet addresses which end with a period and three or four letters like .com, .net, .biz, .edu, and .info, etc.

In order to function on the Internet, a host needs an alphabetic domain name which has an associated numerical Internet Protocol (IP) address record.

Every business goes through cycles or waves; buying and selling domain names is no different.

But domain names are still a vital part of doing business on the Internet. 

Therefore, the market for domain names is extremely active, which means millions of people (and companies) buy and sell domain names on a regular basis.

So, how do you make money with these things?

It’s easier than buying a book on!

Here are eight high-traffic domain marketplaces and auction sites on the Internet:

The objective is to buy a domain name at a relatively low cost and sell it at a higher price.

I say “relatively” lower cost because this doesn’t always mean buying domain names dirt cheap.

In some cases it might require buying a domain name for $500, and selling it for $1000 or more.

However, I purchased a domain name with the precious metal gold in it for $15 in 2001. I recently sold this domain (and a corresponding website) for $5000. This is more than a 30,000% return on my investment!

Granted, this domain name sale included website programming, image files, membership list and a database. But these elements cost me less than $1000 - so my actual return on investment was still pretty good.

Here’s an insider’s secret for buying profitable domain names.

Look to the future!

In other words, things, people and events that are popular today, may not be popular in 2 weeks, 2 months or 2 years.

When I purchased the domain name with the precious metal gold in it I suspected precious metals might be a hot commodity in the future (after a stock market crash), and I was right.

So, when you’re purchasing domain names look for topics, events, people, music and technology which should be popular down the road.

For example, most of the domain names associated with “American Idol” (the popular TV show) have already been purchased and in some cases are overvalued.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t make money on domain names with the phrase “American Idol” or something related to the show.

The idea is to look to the future when purchasing domain names.

This might mean contestant names in Season 8 of American Idol, special reunion concert tickets like the Simon and Garfunkel Tour (SimonGarfunkelReunion09 is available as of this writing), or special events like the 2010 Olympics ( is still available as of this writing)…your domain names should be profitable.

Think of domain names like real estate.

Four years ago property in South Beach Miami FL was hot and sold at a huge premium. The same property today is selling at a huge discount.

The same is true in the “domain portfolio” business.

Another approach is entering hacking tournaments.

If you place in the top percentile of these high-profile competitions, you'll have more work and offers than you could ever handle. 

DEFCON hosts one of the largest hacking events in the world. 

You can also post a website or blog and “lace” it with security, virus and hacking terms with SEO and SEM in mind.

The Truth About Writing for Money

Question: I was recently “downsized” (fired) from a national newspaper chain. I’ve known the newspaper industry has been doomed for years, but I was comfortable in my job. Now I’ve got to hustle to find another job or start a business. Do you think a former newspaper writer has any chance of making a living “online”?

Answer Marc Charles: 
Yes I do.  Will it be easy? It depends on how quickly and easily you adapt to change. And that’s not a trick answer!

In most cases, the transition from a job writing for a large newspaper chain and starting a freelance writing will not easy.

What’s more, most online “news” sites today are actually “news aggregators” sites. In other words, these sites “collect and aggregate” the news So in most cases news aggregator sites do not require a fulltime staff of writers.

That being said, I think you’re headed in the right direction. I’m a big fan of hustling to put things together quickly. I’ve done it more than once.

You can apply your talents, expertise and insight to generating income immediately – whether that’s with a job, sub-contracting opportunity or freelance work.

Once you’ve got income coming in you can start building a freelance writing business “on the side”. The objective should be to replace income from the job.

However, writing “news” is not where the money is today.

My advice is would be to focus on one of four areas if you want to build a writing business. The four areas I would focus on are:

1)    Direct marketing (copywriting, editing, sales letters, Internet landing pages)
2)    Niche publishing (like financial markets, corporate real estate, agricultural futures, etc.)
3)    3) Targeted Information (special reports, ebooks, newsletters, unique premiums, directories, and “How to Guides”)
4)    4) a combination of all these areas!

I'm frustrated.  I've spent a small fortune on every conceivable home business opportunity and online money making deal. 90% of them are a joke! Most Internet marketers are nothing more than shills and hucksters. I value your opinion and insight...and every time you've recommended something its been valuable. Is anything legitimate these days?

Wow.....I enjoyed your email! If you apply this attitude to business you'll make a fortune!

But first I need to defend my fellow hucksters and business opportunity salesmen.

I'm serious.

Yes......there are cons, shills, crooks and everything in between in the world today. I could devote a dozen books to all of the crooks I've met in my life and in business.

Ironically, it was one such con artist where I had the most fun in business. I was young entrepreneur but I couldn't believe how resourceful this guy was. In one business venture this guy started offering handguns as premiums! And it worked! The stupid phone rang off the hook for two weeks straight.

Anyway, the problem is not finding legitimate business opportunities or money making ventures.

You could STOP ordering books, courses, tapes, DVDs, special reports, newsletters, conferences, eBooks, webinars and everything in between today, and you would have all of the information you need to run a profitable business and make money.

I'm not kidding.

You need to stop looking for "the secret" formula. The "secret" formula does not exist. There is NOTHING new under the sun.

What you need to acquire is wisdom and understanding.

95% of what you buy from someone else will not impart wisdom and understanding. This is a BIG lesson to learn.

I encourage people to look for the "essence" of a business opportunity or money making venture.

The "essence" is what you really need to make a business go.

And ironically...."essence" is the one thing which is not available when you buy or start a business.

Now...this doesn't mean people can't or won't help you.

This blog is a good example. I'm not charging a nickel for this wisdom. I'm also willing to help almost anyone who has PROVEN they have a passion to learn.

But when you order information products, books, courses and the rest......look for the "essence".

When you understand the "essence" of a business or money making formula, and YOU APPLY this will gain wisdom.

It's a big deal.....and this is 100% true and accurate.

No one is moving to Maine. Okay...that's an exaggeration but the number is small.

Granted....older retirees, usually higher net worth individuals are moving a trickle.

But young, aspiring, irreverent entrepreneurs are NOT moving or relocating to Maine.

The number one reason is the cost. It's a pain doing bricks and mortar business in Maine.

The second reason is the weather. The third it's rural, not urban....and therefore no large networks of like minded people.

There are few places as clean, beautiful, inspiring, safe and interesting. 

But a massive inflow of passionate entrepreneurs is not happening.

Governor LaPage has recommended dumping the Maine income tax. You'll never see it happen. But yes.....that's a start.

But really....the entire state needs an overhaul from top to bottom with regards to BUSINESS. 

Billionaires move here because it's untouched and they can build wildlife easements, parks, and trusts to protect themselves. Which is fine. But Billionaires are only here for about 6 weeks. You will rarely find one here in February.

The Secret to Closing a Sale (online or off)

The “A” Prospect Advantage

No matter what you’re selling, your job will be a lot easier if you target marketing efforts to “A” prospects.

By that I mean pre-qualified buyers. These are people who have already purchased what you’re selling. Ideally, they’ve done it recently (and often).

“B” prospects are people who have shown an interest in what you’re selling – maybe by calling a toll-free number, sending an e-mail, or writing a letter to ask for more information. They’re interested, and they’ve acted on that interest which is great.

But “B” prospects are not nearly as valuable to you as “A” prospects.

How and where do you find these prime prospects?

I’ll provide some examples in this report of real life situations.

The best place to find “A” prospects in your own list of buyers. If you don’t have a list like this don’t worry, I’ll show you how to get one, build one or use someone else’s list.

When you are selling products to an in-house list of “A” prospects try to create an offer or product similar to one they purchased from you in the past.

Another option is to partner with a company that has successfully sold products like yours. You can rent their postal mailing list, or “piggyback” a message on the company’s email subscriber list. You should never send unsolicited bulk email to anyone, this is spam. A nice way around this is to “piggyback” on someone else’s opt-in email subscriber list.  These buyers should respond well to your offers.

Most of the entrepreneurs, business owners and startup ventures I’ve helped over the years are clueless when it comes to the “A and B Prospect” concept.

I learned this strategy at the feet of one of the great direct marketers of all time, Gary Halbert. Gary passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2007

Most entrepreneurs (online and off) focus for a lifetime on “B” prospects, and produce dismal sales results to prove it.

Any time you are going to try to sell products and services you should always focus primarily on “A” prospects.

When it comes to marketing products online, do you think the people who responded to Google AdWords ads, or sales letters in the organic search results, are “A” or “B” prospects.

It’s a loaded question.

In some cases the people who respond to AdWords ads or sales letter landing pages are “A” prospects – they’ve recently purchased what you are offering.

But in my experience marketing online since 1994 – the majority of people who respond to ads are “B” prospects.

It’s hard to “rent” legitimate, legal, permission based; opt-in email lists for “A” prospects. And believe me I know….I’ve been working with email lists for more than 15 years.

However, it’s fairly easy to buy advertising or purchase “piggybank” promotions on opt-in email newsletters or related media.

It is MUCH easier to find and rent direct mail (postal) lists of “A” prospects (recent buyers). In fact, it’s a multi-billion dollar business. Google “top buyer list brokerages” and see for yourself.

Specific Examples

Three of the hardest items to sell in this economy are cars, boats and homes.

But, people are doing it.

Bob W. in Los Angeles CA is one of the top Toyota salesmen in the country. Granted, the parent dealership has several prime locations, ads running and billboards.

But all of the salesmen have this advantage. Bob maintains an “A prospect” list of recent auto buyers (2-5 years) in his zip code, and he also rents lists from different brokers. Bob retains professional copywriters to craft sales letters and offers to bring people into the dealership. Bob closes a lot of sales because he focuses on “A” prospects.

Terrell G. lives in Miami FL. He is an independent boat broker, and moves millions of dollars of product…even in the current economy. Terrell swears by the power of the “A” prospect advantage. Terrell lets other people, brokerages and salesmen deal with “B” prospects. Terrell spends 90% of his time working, consulting and closing “A” prospects.

Larry D. is from Chicago IL. He specializes in selling condos and “hip” apartments downtown. Larry maintains an in-house list of more than 3,200 recent condo buyers (2-5 years), as well as “A” prospect referrals from other brokers and friends. Larry sells millions of dollars of properties every year while others struggle. The secret is focusing on “A” prospects.

Closing Online Sales

Most entrepreneurs build websites, stores, social media, Facebook Fan pages and almost everything else with things that are important to them.

However, as we’ve seen a powerful principle applied on Amazon, Google, Zappos, Walmart and other high-traffic, high-converting and high sales websites. These sites are built from a buyer’s point of view.

There are other things involved like graphic design, simplicity, ease of ordering, intuitive websites and great copy.

But, when you build a website THINK and ACT like a buyer, not a salesmen, or an entrepreneur.

Ask yourself, “What can we do to really help the buyer or visitor to our site”?

This Question Has Stood the Test of Time!

 “What can I do to make this work for YOU today”?

This question is an age-old trick employed by used car salesmen, and many others.

And on the surface it might seem cheap and degrading.

But it’s not!

What Can I Do To Make This Work For You Today?

I’ve closed more than fifty million dollars in sales in my businesses over the past 30 years. This so-called used-car “pitch” has helped me more than any single thing.

When you ask someone what you can do to make this deal work for them, they will usually respond with an answer (if they are a qualified prospect).

The answer should help you craft a wonderful proposal, deal or offer……so you can close the sale!

Most salesmen are concerned with themselves, not others.

This question, “What can I do to make this work for you?” puts the burden on your prospect. If they really want what you are selling they WILL respond.

Granted, some prospects will respond with a ridiculous answer, such as “Yeah, I want $5,000 knocked off or I’d like it free”.

But these types of answers are rare. Most “serious” qualified prospects will respond with an honest reply. Then, it’s your job to craft an offer or proposal with the BUYER’S DESIRE in writing.

So now we come back to where we started.

The secret to closing a sale is having qualified “A” prospects.

An “A” prospect is someone who has purchased what you’re selling (houses, boats, cars, gold, carpet, furniture, web hosting, or advertising… doesn’t matter).

In addition, an “A” prospect will have done so recently, and for approximately for the same price as what you are offering, and ideally several times.

A “B” prospect is someone who is very interested. They may have responded to an advertisement, website sales copy, a TV commercial or many other things.

But a “B” prospect has NEVER purchased what you are selling.

In order to close a high volume of sales I think it’s a good idea to focus on “A” prospects.

When you have qualified “A” prospects simply ask them (in person, on the phone, in an email, on a website or in a sales letter) what you can do to make this work for THEM – today.

When you start to apply these secrets you’ll be impressed how powerful they are in your business.
